The world of Warhammer is vast and large. Many books have been written about the ever expanding world of Warhammer as many have written stories that take place in the Warhammer world. It was just first to be a background setting in the role playing game using miniature figures. The game took off and so did the background setting as it then became a whole world and had a history filled with interesting creatures and creations.

There are even more cast of characters as they branch off from there and the Warhammer world grows. One of those branch outs would be the Space Marines who are genetically altered humans from the Space Marines Legion that followed a codex. There were about 20 species in the Space Marine Legion in which we are then introduced to the 40k Space Wolves. They have their own background story history and world. In fact the Space Wolves are not the only characters to have a history. Each one has a detailed history and story, planet that they are from, and where they are integrated and fit in the world of Warhammer.
The Space Wolves for example were from the planet of Fenris. The back ground history then continues to say they were picked by the Emperor of Mankind to serve him due to hearing of the Space Wolves prowess, and became the 20th member of the Space Marine Legion. That is just part of their back story as the background history is extensive for every character as it tells who they are, how they fit, who they interact with within, the war they fought all in the Warhammer universe. The Warhammer world is ever growing and ever changing which is one of the reasons this game is so successful.
