The first experiences of his new home and family are incredibly exciting to a new puppy. He will get lots of love and attention showered on him and there will be so many new things to see and smell and other things, like a dog kennel and other pets, to get used to. In all this excitement it is sometimes easy for the new owners to overlook moments of bad behaviour, such as leaping up at anyone who enters a room or chewing on Dad’s slippers. However, it is vital that dog training begins as soon as possible so that these don’t become learned behaviours which are much more difficult to stop. One of the best ways to help train your new addition is to use a puppy exercise pen.
Exercise pens for dogs can be made from metal, plastic or nylon stretched over an aluminium frame. Any of these types are good for the purpose of training though each have their own advantages and disadvantages. All are quite lightweight and so can be transported from room to room as the family moves around. This way the puppy can be involved in family life wherever it is happening. To stop the annoyance of having guests jumped up at simply put the puppy into the pen before they enter the room and don’t let him out until he has calmed down a bit and got used to their presence. They can pet him over the top of the pen but he won’t be able to reach them. Once calm you can let him out, though do remember to put him straight back in if he jumps so that he will soon learn what is required of him.
Not only is a dog exercise pen good for training it gives the puppy the space to run around, play and generally get some exercise without getting hurt or causing damage to the furniture. Playing with his toys in here is also extremely important as he will then soon learn which things he is allowed to chew.
