Children need playtime; it is an important way for them to make sense of their world. They also love to mimic the things they see their parents do. In fact, parents are sometimes surprised, and even a little embarrassed, to see and hear their children imitate the things they have observed. Many a parent has cringed to hear their child use a swear word when they stub a toe, or to see them get angry in the same manner they have observed when their parents are frustrated in heavy traffic. But aside from the occasional uh-oh moments, parents are usually gratified to watch their children learn new skills through their playtime experiences. There are many types of toys parents can buy that teach valuable skills and promote the use of their children's imaginations. A well-stocked playroom might include dolls and dress-up clothes for both boys and girls.

Lego sets and building blocks are also great toys that lead to constructive playtime. Many parents also like to purchase kids kitchen sets because they offer opportunities for realistic play. Parents who are on a tight budget can still provide kids kitchen sets for make-believe fun. If they are resourceful, they can get a few refrigerator boxes from a local appliance store, and with a good cutting tool and some colored markers, they can create a stove, a sink, and a refrigerator. They can additionally give their children old pots and pans, paper plates, and food packages that have been washed or cleaned out. Their children will likely never miss having a more expensive, manufactured kitchen. The important thing is that their imaginations will be engaged.

For parents who have the money to invest in kids kitchen sets sold in stores or online, there are several different types to look for. Many kids kitchen sets are made out of hard plastic, and these are sold as one piece that contains all of the necessary kitchen appliances in one unit. Wooden kitchen sets are great and can stand up to years of hard use. Most kitchen sets include a sink with a pretend sprayer, a stove, and a refrigerator. Some of them also come complete with dishes and pots and pans. A few even sport a wall phone or a cell phone. Some sets sold on the retail market are sleek and modern in their detailing, while others sport a retro look. They are usually brightly colored with a lot of knobs and buttons to add to the kids' tactile enjoyment.

With either type, children will have hours of make-believe fun. In addition to the kids kitchen sets, if parents want to provide for a full kitchen playtime experience, there are many additional purchases they can make. There are toy versions of all the most popular small appliances; no kids' kitchen would be complete without a toaster, microwave, blender, hand mixer, or coffee maker. There is also a wide selection of accessories and play kitchen gadgets that would complete a play kitchen set. Aprons, oven mitts, spatulas, and play food can all be purchased to enhance playtime. Kids kitchen sets can also teach valuable skills. Children can cook and serve food just like their mom and dad.

They can learn organization as they use cupboards for dishes, pots and pans, and food. A realistic kitchen can serve as an extension of playing house and dress-up. The children will learn important habits that they can put to real-world use. Playtime leads children to be able to handle chores at home and to contribute in a positive way within their families. As they learn to perform household duties and to care for a family's basic needs, they will be taking baby steps to one day be able to do those things for themselves.
