Most people would assume that they wouldn't need to know much about a steam iron. The fact is that most people don't have the first clue what they should be looking for. Most people just own the traditional old iron that their parents used. I won't bore you with with why steam is a superior to use on your clothes, but steam is the future of getting out wrinkles. The sooner you learn what you should be looking for, the better. Steam products are different because they tend to be made with plastic and have to boil water. This means you can run into products that are absolute junk, so it's important to be an educated consumer.

Power is by far the most important thing when it comes to buying this type of product. It isn't a matter of plugging in the iron and you're ready to go. Creating steam requires you to boil water and that takes time. If you go with low watts you're going to find that you're sitting around for 10 minutes waiting for the iron to actually boil the water. You'll also notice that the iron will start to spit water out. This happens when the water gets around boiling, but it isn't rapidly turning into steam. Aim for 1200-1500W of power as this is the minimum of what you need to produce steam properly. Steam irons by Panasonic are typically in this range of power and are reasonably priced too.

I also think that the internet is your best friend. Whether you buy online or not is irrelevant, you need to look at reviews on the product you're interested in. It's very important that you find out if there are recurring complaints. Steam products are typically made of plastic and get hot. This makes them prone to leaking. Make sure that this isn't a common complaint you see. There's a lot of junk out there. Also, just because an item is priced higher than the competition doesn't mean it is better made. Rowenta steam irons (premium brand) that costs a few hundred will leak too. Take a look at steam iron ratings on the internet and make sure the product you're interested in isn't a problem for a lot of consumers.
