The question of who invented golf is a debate amongst historians. There are several places that historians believe is the origin lands of the game. Places that are being considered is England, the Netherlands, Rome, China and Scotland. Each of these places have games that were played similiar to golf in their history. The Chinese played chiwan and the Romans played paganica. In England goff and kolf was played and in the Netherlands kolven was played. These games were played by striking balls with sticks and is in great resemblence to golf.
The modern game of golf has traced back to game played in Scotland in the 15th century. In those times participants hit pebbles into rabbit holes with a club or a stick. The game played then was called gowf. The first written record of the sport took place in 1457 when the King of Scots, James II, banned the game for distracting Scottish people from learning the sport of archery. Even with the game being banned it became very popular and the ban was later lifted in 1502 by King James IV. The game of golf is first known to become popular among women with Mary, the Queen of Scots in 1552. The concept of caddies is linked to her directly.
Golf continued to become more and more popular overtime and eventually became a professional sport. The establishment of golf clubs like the Pestwick Golf Club in 1851 led to the competing of men on a professtional level. This golf club established the oldest of the four major golf championships, The Open Championship. The first to ever be organized took place on October 17, 1860 in South Ayrshire, Scotland. Willie Park, Sr. won over Tom Morris by two strokes to end with a score of 174. The winners at that time received a championship belt. The belt was a red leather belt with a silver buckle. In the first three Opens no money was awarded to the winner. Money began to become part of the award in 1863.
Golf became internationally popular very quickly and the first international tournament was held in 1893 in India. Golf became what's known as a high profile sport a begin receiving a lot of attention from business all over the world as sponsors. In 1895 women were allowed to compete professionally. The first golf magazine titled simply 'Golf' began publication in 1897.
